The27.5″ wheel size accelerates fast and the 29er rolls fast (once you get up to speed). Whether you’re riding at Jonathan Dickinson State Park , Markham Park , or anywhere in
Headtube angle (HTA) . Starting with either a 27.5″ or 29er bike, converting to mixed wheel will generally slacken the head tube angle by about a degree, give or take. I plugged in the geometry for two different hardtails, each with a 66.5° head tube angle, and with a mixed-wheel setup, both HTAs landed just below 65.5°.
Earlybikes had 26 inch wheels but now almost all have larger 27.5″ or 29″ wheels for more speed and efficient climbing. Suspension didn’t arrive on the scene until the early 1990s. With a hardtail vs full suspension, the lighter and stiffer hardtail will always win on the flats and pavement. The same is true on steep, long climbs.
