This week, two Chicago-area high school teams — Prosser Academy on the city’s northwest side and the ‘Door Knobs’ from the northwest suburbs — represented the Chicago region at the Horizon Educational’s Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) World Final in Las Vegas. Challenging high school students to not only engineer the internal hydrogen components of the 1:10 scale RC car, but to redesign the chassis and even use computer-aided-design to create more aerodynamic car bodies – the H2GP is able to successfully integrate traditional science and engineering with the arts. Over 1258 laps and 6 hours, the team used all the renewable energy design and engineering skills they picked up over the six-month Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix program – such as mechanical engineering, hydrogen chemistry and data science – to outcompete other teams and win a ticket to Las Vegas. wmX6NAH.
